An extensive extended cruise through the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a pause. The vessel departed without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff became aware the woman was missing.

A large-scale hunt located her body the next day.

Officials are examining the event, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

Head of the cruise operator said that guests and crew on the vessel were informed that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that travelers would be provided a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Master" prohibiting any additional guests from entering the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the ship in Cairns upon its return.
