On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
