Several Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts A Delta Airlines Flight Arriving in Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew have been injured after a Delta jet traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by turbulence on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier told. A number of the onboard staff were injured.

Emergency medical services stated they treated a total of five people, and transferred three of them to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that such as pain in the back and headaches. The injured were between their 30s up to the 70s.

It is the newest example of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with experts saying that climate change is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the official noted, clarifying that the plane arrived "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday morning.

Paramedics said they got a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is growing more common - and potentially more dangerous.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when a separate Delta aircraft, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "significant" rough air just 120 minutes into the lengthy trip, and diverted for an emergency landing.

Recently, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a frightening five seconds of severe turbulence. An individual lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

In-flight turbulence is not uncommon on aircraft journeys, and while instances of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are around five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of more than 35 million aircraft departures that are conducted worldwide.

Severe turbulence is categorized as when the vertical motions of a aircraft passing through disturbed air apply more than 1.5g-force on your body - a strong enough force to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As global warming alters atmospheric conditions, experts warn that flying could become less smooth: warming trends and changing jet streams in the upper atmosphere are expected to heighten the frequency and intensity of severe turbulence.
