An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in any cars.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The wider security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
